Good Things Happening at Momentum High School!
Thursday, November 21st was a day filled with learning, engagement, and opportunities as Momentum High School students look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday.
🎓 FAFSA and Financial Opportunities
Mrs. Lara, our dedicated Instructional Learning Specialist and Family and Community Engagement Liaison, partnered with our campus counselor, Ms. Ray, to inform students about FAFSA and the financial opportunities available as they plan their educational journeys beyond high school.Ms. Ray explained that FAFSA isn’t just for students heading to "big universities," but also for those considering "small universities like community colleges or trade schools". With many of our students interested in trade opportunities, this session was especially impactful.
During the Q&A portion, student David Cruz stood out with insightful questions about subsidized and unsubsidized loans and what happens to excess FAFSA funds. His curiosity sparked meaningful discussions, helping students better understand how to fund their futures.
♟️ Chess Tournament
Momentum High School also hosted its first-ever Chess Tournament today, organized by Mr. Boudreaux (a BLEND teacher) and Mr. McPhail (an ASAP Night teacher). This welcoming space brought together students from all backgrounds and skill levels to learn, challenge themselves, and grow their skills.
The room buzzed with focus as students planned their next moves to outwit their opponents. Events like these highlight how MHS is leveling up to provide traditional high school experiences and opportunities for our students, encouraging them to try something new or build on existing skills.
🚨 The Dangers of Fentanyl
Special Agent Pagan visited our campus to deliver a powerful presentation on the dangers of drugs, particularly fentanyl. The session opened with a tribute to Jefferson Gutierrez, a 2024 MHS graduate who tragically passed away due to fentanyl earlier this semester.
Jefferson’s mother shared a heartfelt letter with students, urging them to make safe choices:
"Please be very aware of what is happening in the world today. Drugs are cruel because they come saying, 'I am here for you. I will make you feel good. If you are sad, I will fix your pain.' But what they promise and what they do are two completely different things. What they do is take hold of you, and once you try them, drugs will not let you go."
Special Agent Pagan of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI Houston) concluded the session with impactful video clips and insights from his professional experience, leaving students more informed and aware of the dangers of drug use.
